City prepares for street repairs, plans for Fourth of July celebration

Hello, Folks!

Martin Poore here, Mayor pro tem. I’m currently manning the ship, while our beloved mayor tends to some personal business. It’s been an interesting couple of weeks since I’ve taken over the reins.

We have managed to work through approving the Waggin’ Trails Dog Park, an off-leash dog park located at the back of La Vernia City Park. It will lie just beyond Hole 3 of the Disc Golf Course, between the maintenance building and D Field, which is the small softball field. The La Vernia Dog Park Coalition should begin construction soon.

Hopefully, everyone fared well in the Big Freeze. It sure was pretty, especially those giant snowflakes falling from the sky, but boy was it cold! The city experienced some water issues, and we have managed to work through most of them. We are still waiting on parts to arrive to finish all the repairs. One of the good things that came out of the freeze was that Public Works sat down and did an assessment of the various issues that arose. They were able to develop a pretty good list of “Lessons Learned.” That list should help us to better prepare for similar weather in the future.

Spring will soon be upon us, which is apparent with all of the Little League activity in the park.

For those of you who use the park regularly, the restrooms are back in operation.

As things continue to warm up, we will also begin to have crews working on our 2021 street maintenance and repairs.

The governor’s latest executive order alleviates the mandates that have caused quite a stir over the past several months. With Texas “opening back up,” I expect that folks will continue to exercise caution and that businesses will exercise due diligence as they make their own decisions on how to move forward through the pandemic. Overall, hospitalizations are down in our area, and I would like to see that trend continue.

As we look forward into the summer, we are taking a hard look at the Fourth of July celebration. We have every intention of having an awesome fireworks display and are examining the possibility of other festivities, given uncertainties due to the pandemic.
