Donald Ray Hormuth left this earthly life on Thursday, March 30, 2023, after suffering a stroke on March 15, 2023. Donald was born Feb. 27, 1942, to Milton and Alwine Helmke Hormuth in San Antonio, Texas.

Donald was baptized and confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in La Vernia. He graduated from La Vernia High School with 13 classmates in 1960 and continued that special relationship through the years. He attended Texas Lutheran College, graduating in 1965 with a degree in elementary education and obtained a master’s degree from Northern Arizona University. He taught at Juan Seguin Elementary in Seguin for four years before moving to Las Vegas, Nev., where he taught elementary physical education until 1993 when he retired, and then stayed for another eight years as a substitute teacher.

Donald returned to La Vernia in 2004 to look after his parents, who have preceded him in death, along with his brother, Keith.

On Jan. 8, 2011, he married a TLC classmate, Shirley Kasper. He joined Shepherd King Lutheran Church in San Antonio, and that became the center of many of their activities. They also connected with many of their TLC friends for happy times and enjoyed time with friends in the Doss community, where each year he volunteered at the Doss Fish Fry.

Donald is survived by his wife Shirley; his aunt, Erna Lee Hormuth; daughters Jill Holtby (Troy), Katy Dedmon (Jerad), and Kary Keegan (Michael); grandchildren Tyler, Alex, and Ashley Holtby, Donavan Turner, Brayden, and Koehler Dedmon, and Colin and Mia Keegan; nephews Michael and Gabriel Hormuth; sister-in-law Annabel Wilkinson and daughters Carrie Beaird and Cristal Ristau; the Port Mansfield fishing buddies; friends at the poker table and the bridge table; and the dance partners at Martinez!

Visitation was held on Monday, April 3, from 5-7 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in La Vernia.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Shepherd King Lutheran Church in San Antonio.

Interment followed in the Greenwood Cemetery in Fredericksburg.
